I was first introduced to fearing the Lord in Sunday School. I didn’t completely understand what it meant. But, once I started studying the Word and learning about what fearing the Lord looks like, my faith began to prosper in ways it hadn’t before.
For example, Proverbs 30 made me want to give my time and resources to the needy. I have now helped volunteer 5+ places including Habitat for Humanity, Woodhaven, and the Food Bank.
I have recently started reading Proverbs for the third time, and I have gained more knowledge about what a woman who fears the Lord looks like.
Fear of the Lord
To fear the Lord means that you are in awe of God. This means you will respect, obey, and trust God and his commands.
The fear the Lord was first introduced in Genesis 22:12, “He said, Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son from me.” Abraham was commended for trusting in the Lord and for having the Lord as his priority.
Characteristics of a woman who fears the Lord
(Proverbs 31:8-27 reference)
A woman who fears the Lord will be trustworthy. Verse 11 says, “The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.”
2. Hard worker
A woman who fears the Lord will be a hard worker. Verse 13 says, “She seeks wool and flax, and works will willing hands.” A woman who fears the Lord uses her skills and abilities God has given her and she always works hard at it.
3. Has true wisdom
A woman who fears the Lord will have true wisdom. Proverbs teaches us that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10). God also blesses us with wisdom (Proverbs 2:6). Verse 26 says, “She opens her mouth with wisdom.”
A woman who fears the Lord is kind. Verse 26 says, “The teaching of kindness is on her tongue.” She uses words that build each other up; and won’t gossip or slander.
A woman who fears the Lord is strong. Verse 17 says, “She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong.” Verse 25, Strength and dignity are her clothing.
A woman who fears the Lord will be generous. She is generous with her time and money, and invests in people who are needy. Verse 20 says, “She opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy.”
7. She trusts in God so she doesn’t have to worry about the future
A woman who fears the Lord trusts in God so she doesn’t have to worry about the future. Verse 25 says, “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.” She is dressed in confidence and strength, which means she doesn’t have to worry about what will be thrown at her in the future.
8. Provides for her family; is selfless
Verse 14-15 says, “She is like the ships of a merchant; she brings her food from afar. She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens.” Verse 21, “She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet.” A woman who fears the Lord provides for her family and is selfless. She puts her families needs before her own, and will do whatever it takes to make sure they have everything they need.
Why we should fear the Lord
First, a woman who fears the Lord will be praised. “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Everyone will know she is a Child of God because Proverbs tells us that she is rare to find, like jewels (Proverbs 31:10). It will be so obvious to everyone because you are fully rooted in Jesus Christ.
